“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike” – John F Kennedy.

Cycling has always been one of my favourite hobbies, and I can’t agree more with JFK’s quote above. While travelling the world, I love to rent a bike and explore the destination on wheels, with the wind in my hair. When I moved to Abu Dhabi, I made it a point to rent a bike almost every weekend, where I cruised up and down the Corniche – with its scenic views that I can never get tired of. My father, shares the same sentiment about cycling, and over the years, we formed a bond through cycling, no matter the destination.

With my parents in town over the festive holidays, my father and I decided to check out the bikeshare program, powered by Cyacle, in order to enjoy the beautiful weather and explore the city.  Renting a bike is relatively easy. You provide your credit/debit card and select the type of pass you are looking for. Once you pay, the system generates a code which is used to unlock the bikes from the docking station. There are currently more than 50 stations scattered around the entire city and renting options include:

  • 1 day pass – AED 20
  • 3 days pass – AED 50
  • 1 month pass – AED 99
  • 1 year pass – AED 499

Now the tricky part … you have to “re-charge” your bike every 60 minutes, otherwise you would be charged overtime. Which means you cannot keep the bike overnight, and you have to continuously be conscious of the time while riding. As first time users, we did not download the app, rather went from station to station, which did cause a lot of frustration as most of the downtown docks were full and so we were charged overtime. However, the app is incredibly handy and informative. It gives you an overview of the nearest station, how many bikes are docked, has a timer so you can plan your 60 minutes in advance, and the best part, gives you statistics of your trip.

So what did our experience look like? Click on the gallery below to find out 🙂

Cyacle is a great initiative, not only for fitness and visitors, but also to encourage residents to explore our city more! While riding along the scenic paths, fully immersed in fresh air, our senses become more aware of our surroundings, compared to sitting in a car. We have our best weather currently in Abu Dhabi, so what are you waiting for – grab a bike, and give it a go! 🙂

Disclaimer: All views are my own and all photographs are © My Pink Diary, unless otherwise stated. While the Corniche is fully “bike-friendly”, a lot of other places in the downtown area do not have bike paths, which resulted in us having to cycle on the roads. This is not advisable for safety reasons.
