There has been a recent detox boom in Abu Dhabi, almost everyone I spoke to was on some form of reboot plan. Lifestyle bloggers have been promoting certain companies with amazing results, and in a matter of days, detoxing became a trend, everyone was talking about. While I have never really done a proper detox before , after my recent summer holiday, I did feel my system needed a re-set from all the ice cream and guilt-free indulgences.
We are completely spoiled for choice when it comes to detox programs offered by health conscious food companies, however most come at a very high cost. Whether the prices are justified, or not, I am not an expert and that is not the purpose of this post. I do have a juicer, and it would definitely be less costly to produce the juices myself, however I am the type of personality, if I pay for it – I have to stick with it, not to mention I hate washing dishes! One day, while enjoying a smoothie at Jamba Juice, I noticed a very attractive detox promotion for AED 99 per day (regular price is AED 149 per day), and I felt it was the right time, and price, to test this out.
I ordered a 3 day detox from the Abu Dhabi Mall branch for AED 297 (taking advantage of the promotion until November). They explained to me what ingredients are used in the juices, which I highly appreciated as I CANNOT stand the taste of celery, parsley or cardamom which other detoxes are loaded with. I decided to start on a Thursday and finish on a Saturday so that I could control my liquid intake, and keep the juices fresh.
The juices have a 2 day expiry date, so I picked the juices up 1 day in advance from the store. They pack each one in an adorable yellow mini cooler bag, which is yours to keep after you finish. They also include a booklet explaining how the detox works, what sequence you should drink the juices, and nutritional information about each one, so you know exactly what you are consuming. Per day, you consume 6 bottles (365ml each) loaded with fresh ingredients, free from any artificial flavours, preservatives and no added sugar.
Here is the break-down of the juices in sequential order:
- Morning Starter – Sweet Beet (beetroot, cucumber, lemon & apple)
- Mid Morning Energizer – Tropical Greens (pineapple, lemon, apple, cucumber & spinach)
- Mid Day Refresher – Ginger Zinger (apple, carrot, lemon, ginger)
- Mid Afternoon Energizer – Tropical Greens (pineapple, lemon, apple, cucumber & spinach)
- Evening Boost – Spicy Lemonade (lemon, agave & cayenne pepper)
- Night Delight – Cashew Delight (almond milk, cashew nuts, whole dates, cinnamon & cocoa)
I started my first juice at 9am, and consumed a juice every 2 hours – which worked out perfectly as my last was at 7pm. Drinking a lot of water and herbal tea helped to keep me hydrated, and I can honestly say at no point did I feel faint, weak, or hungry – as most people think. During this period, I did not do any strenuous exercise, rather I went for daily walks and did a bit of yoga at home. I also planned it around a very quiet weekend, when I could benefit from finishing my DIY projects which have been on hold. You also need to drink the juices every 2 hours so keeping them in the fridge is absolutely necessary. Also – what no one admits to, but I’m sure you realise … the toilet becomes your best friend – I mean imagine 4 litres of liquid going through your system PER DAY!
I totally loved all the combinations and the flavours were very fresh. At first I was worried about the Spicy Lemonade as it had cayenne pepper, but it worked perfectly well with the lemonade! The main reason I did the detox was to re-boot my system, and I achieved that! My skin and hair became shiny, my water retention and bloating disappeared, and not to mention, I had a surge of energy all weekend long – EVEN on Sunday morning when I went back to work! Although after 3 days of consuming only liquid, I did miss actually chewing on food, but I definitely can see myself repeating the program every once in a while … after all, who can say no to a vitamin boost especially living in the desert?
