Happy Saturday fellow readers!
I have decided to add a new themed series of postcards to this blog, highlighting special places in the United Arab Emirates, which I have discovered, fallen in love with, and hope you will too. While most of these gems will be in Abu Dhabi (my home for the passed 5 years), I have really become fond of some special places in the other Emirates too.
The inspiration for these series happened today, as I discovered the most incredible cafe, by pure coincidence while I was leaving a medical centre. Art House Cafe, located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen neighbourhood, is an artistic, one of a kind, unique concept. Located adjacent to the Etihad Antiques and Modern Galleries, this cafe was created by Khaled Seddiq Al Mutawa, the founder of the Etihad Modern Art Gallery.
It welcomes you from a cozy courtyard, where you are greeted by a vibrant setting of a colourful mosaic made from bricks, which encourages children to channel their creativity and leave behind a small legacy. Next to it, a metal gate wall holding a collection of love padlocks which resemble the famous Pont des Arts bridge in Paris. An explosion of colour, light and quirky elements awaited, as I walked inside, but the quirkiest of all, was a rainbow coloured turtle munching on a lettuce leaf.
Art House Cafe is designed from waste materials turned into beautiful art. Quirky details include a large frangipani tree dressed in colourful second hand T-shirts, old wine bottles turned into light fixtures, tables made out of tree trunks, old gas canisters converted into table stools, a couch made entirely out of plush toys, old kettles turned into plant holders, and a beautiful shelf made from old suitcases. With abundant natural daylight and plenty of greenery to disguise the sights and sounds of the bustling city, the cafe is transformed into an oasis of peace and tranquility.
The menu offers a variety of tea and coffee blends, delicious crepes, wraps, burgers and salads making it the ideal place for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and anything in between. It is the perfect place to get lost in a good book, exercise reflection, inspire the soul and encourage creativity to flow. The cafe has become a hub for emerging artists to showcase their talent, as collections are incorporated into the decor and are available for sale at a reasonable price.
In such a fast paced world where busy schedules take over our lives, I am very happy to have found this hidden gem, where I can stop the hands of time, at least for an afternoon, regain my creativity and let my inspiration flow. 🙂
